I'm declaring myself finished... with one whole day to spare!

I made it out to Olde Town Conyers today and found seven more historical places. The entire thing is rather long, so I'll try and break it up into seperate letters. Here goes!

The first two sites were very close to each other, so I put in extra time in the middle... which happened to have a nice bench to sit on. The first site was a plaque for "Fightin Joe" Wheeler. The inscription is as follows.

Near this spot, May 9, 1865 Mayor General Joseph Wheeler, C.S.A and part of his staff were captured by Federal troops who were pursuing President Jefferson Davis. General Wheeler was released at Athens but, later, was again arrested and sent north with President Davis. He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware, Del, until June 18, 1865, when he was released. General Wheeler fought more battles than any other calvary man in the War Between the Sattes. Wounded 3 times, he had his horse shot out from under him 16 times. In the U.S. Army in the Spanish American War, he served with equal honor and distinction.

The second site was a plaque for Sherman at Conyers.

On the night of November 17, 1864, Morgan's division, 14th Corps of the Left Wing of General Sherman's army, which had marched from Atlanta on the 15th on its destructive March to the Sea, camped in this immediate vicinity with headquarters in Conyers (1/2 mile north). During the day, the railroad had been destroyed from Lithonia to the Yellow river by the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics adn details of Morgan's division. About noon on the 17th, General Sherman and his staff stopped at the home of Mrs. Scott, in Conyers, where he learned from Augusta papers dated the 13th that his secret plan of operation had not yet been divined.

Once the library was convinced that it really was okay for me to play at the historical site in front of their building, I set up on the park bench. There were a number of people, and I got a few odd glances but that was about it.

Cheers, Kira (Declaration from 2001, completed JL)
